Overview

The Canadian Homebrew Championship (CHC) is a collaboration between the Canadian Brewer of the Year Circuit (BOTY), the Canadian Homebrewers Association (CHA), and the local organizing homebrew club (GTA Brews for 2022). This is an invite-only homebrew competition, where only the top 3 winners of each local club’s qualifier competition are invited to submit entries.

This competition acts as a Final Round for the BOTY circuit, where BOTY 2022 titles will be awarded:

  • 2022 Canadian Homebrewer of the Year
  • 2022 Canadian Homebrew Club of the Year
  • 2022 Canadian Homebrewed Beer of the Year

This competition will be judged by BJCP Judges according to the newly released 2021 BJCP Guidelines.

Each invited entrant will be allowed to enter up to 6 entries each for their shot to take home the coveted BOTY titles. The competition will only accept Beer entries, no Mead or Cider will be accepted for this competition. Entrants may summit entries to any of the accepted subcategories. There is no restriction to enter only the subcategories of which the brewer originally won in to qualify for this competition.

Due to the small size of the competition, Award Categories will created after registration closes to create appropriately sized flights of subcategories with similar characteristics. For reference, here is the Summer Showdown 2022 Award Categories, created with this same methodology for our recent competition.

Judges/Stewards: Register online, or email us! If you are a BJCP Provisional Judge or above, we'd love to have you judge!

Competition Rules

First competition? *Check out our BJCP Competition Guide*

All entries must be made using private equipment in adherence to the homebrewing spirit (i.e., no commercial beer or help from Brew on Premises operations, etc.).

All entries must be received at the mailing/drop-off locations by the entry deadline. The competition organizers are not responsible for miss-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

The competition organizers reserve the right to combine styles for judging and to restructure awards as needed depending upon the quantity and quality of entries. All possible efforts will be made to combine similar styles. All entries in combined categories will be judged according to the style they were originally entered in.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate, score, and provide feedback on each entry. Each flight will have at least one BJCP ranked judge. The Best of Show judging will be determined by a Best of Show panel based on a second judging of the top winners.

This competition will accept Beer from all categories listed in the 2021 BJCP Guidelines. There is a limit of 1 entry per classic style subcategory (1-26), and 2 entries per specialty category (21B, 27-34), provided they are different beers. Each participant will be limited to 6 entries, only qualifying brewers will be invited to enter.

Scoresheets will available for download from the registration software promptly after the results are announced.

Submission Details

Cost is $10 CAD per entry. The only available payment method is PayPal, cash/cheques will not be accepted.

When registering entries, make sure to follow the entry instructions (if specified) that are specified in the 2021 BJCP Guidelines. Failure to note key information may impact the judges’ scoring of your entry. However also keep in mind that too much information can also be detrimental. We will not publish entry names that are deemed to be offensive.

Bottle Acceptance Guidelines
Each entry should consist of two 12 oz brown glass bottles.
Bottles must be void of all identifying information, especially commercial/home-made labels. Any marked caps must be blacked out. A Bottle ID form must then be attached to each bottle by elastic band (NO tape please).

Note: 12 oz (~355 mL) brown bottles are strongly preferred; however we will also accept green/clear glass/cans/PET, sizes up to 22 oz, and corked/swingtop bottles, if necessary.

Bottle ID labels can be printed by clicking the print icon next to each of your entries on the “Account” -> “Entries” page. Recipe sheets and PayPal receipts are not required. Bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.
