GTA Brews is excited to announce our fifth annual, nation-wide, homebrew competition for beer, mead, and cider; Brew Slam 2019 (#BrewSlam)! We are excited to build on last year’s massive success which saw 826 entries, from 191 entrants, in 8/10 provinces, judged by 75 judges, over just 3 days, making this the largest homebrew competition in Canada! We are ecstatic to have John Palmer attending as our guest of honour (Nov 8-10) to help ring in our 5th year!

This is a BJCP sanctioned competition, and also part of the Canadian Brewer of the Year (BOTY) circuit. The judging will take place at Amsterdam Brewery (Leaside) from Nov 8th to 10th. Judging will be performed by BJCP ranked judges and pro brewers, using the BJCP 2015 Guidelines and Provisional Styles.
Entries for Brew Slam will be accepted at the shipping and drop off locations beginning on October 16th, three weeks after the system starts accepting entry registrations on Sept 25th. The entry deadline for all entries to arrive at the shipping and drop off locations is end of business day on Saturday November 2nd. Ship early to avoid delays.
This year we have implemented a few changes to the structure of the competition in order to encourage more entrants:
- The total cap has been moved to PAID entries, rather than registered entries
- This means that registering an unpaid entry does not count, only paid entries are guaranteed a spot.
- The per-entrant cap is staggered to allow prospective entrants a full week opportunity to register at the lower cap.
- This means that there is low risk of anyone being shut out of the competition due to hitting the cap in the first week.

Brew Slam has Pro-Ams, “Brewer for a Day”, and thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs. If feedback alone isn’t enough to convince you to enter our competition, then our ridiculously big list of prizes should be!
We are also excited to work with some fantastic sponsors for even better prizes than what we had last year!

Visit our Rules and Submission Instructions page!
Our rules and submission instructions are fairly standard and relaxed, but please make sure to give them a quick look. This page also has the addresses for our drop off and shipping locations.

First time entering a competition? Want a quick refresher/overview about how it works? This guide also explains why no beer is ever out of style when entered correctly, every beer you can brew has a home in the BJCP Guidelines.

We need as many volunteers as possible to make this competition a success. If you are reading this, and are able to be in Toronto Nov 3rd, 8th, 9th, and/or 10th, we need your help. We need judges, stewards, and even bottle sorters.
Toronto has the largest pool of BJCP judges in Canada which allows us to keep flight sizes low and focus on the best quality judging and feedback possible.
We are planning a series of incremental rewards to thank our volunteers for their time, check out the volunteer page for more info.
