Presentation: All Things Malt Related with Devin Huffman

Devin Huffman

We're thrilled to have Devin Huffman, founder & head maltster at Barn Owl Malt, to present to us at this month's meeting! With a passion for craft beer and a recognition of the importance of local ingredients, Devin set out to bridge the gap between craft brewing in Ontario and local grain producers. Trained in malting at the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Center’s Malt Academy and with a background in engineering, Devin designed, built & operates the craft malt house near Belleville, Ontario.

Barn Owl Malt is excited to be launching a new line of local malts using European barley varieties grown right here in Ontario. During the presentation Devin will take a comparative look at European and North American barley varieties, how they are adapted to the Ontario growing conditions and how their unique genetics effect malt characteristics. Through the lens of malt analysis reports we will explore the nuances of barley varieties bred for adjunct brewing vs. all grain brewing, and how Barn Owl Malt is striving to better serve the evolving demands from the craft brewing industry through variety selection.

Please join us for this discussion and gain some insight into barley varieties, malt analysis and how you can use a COA to help guide your next brew day.

Brewery Show/Tell

During our last few meetings, we had several club members show and tell their home brewery spaces. The feedback has been very positive so we want to keep it going! It's a great opportunity to see more of our club members brewing spaces and equipment that we wouldn't normally see in an in person club meeting.

The first 30 minutes of the meeting will be dedicated to this idea! In order to execute this in an orderly fashion, we need people to email us to sign up!

Please email meetings@gtabrews.ca to sign up, or IM David Chang-Sang on Facebook.
