What is your occupation (outside homebrewing)?
What got you into homebrewing?
A bunch of my friends asked me to help form a homebrew club atUBC so we could drink cheap, cheap beer. The rest is history.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of homebrewing?
Uhm. Does beer judging count? I feel like it’s pretty related. I do community theatre.
How long have you been brewing and how many batches last year?
I’ve brewing on and off for about 6 years. It was hard to be motivated to brew when I was living in the Yukon for couple of years, six hours away from the grocery store.
Do you have any favourite styles you like to brew?
I’m trying to master an American Amber Ale that’s more malt-forward, less hoppy right now. I’ve also been experimenting with ciders and mead.
What kind of setup do you use?
I just started doing all grain. I use the stove top. I was mostly brewing extract/ grain when I was living in Vancouver.
What is the worst beer you have brewed?
I can’t remember what the beer style was, but it was salty. I wish I knew what goses were back then.
What did you learn from that worst beer?
Follow the sanitizer instructions.
What is the best beer you have brewed?
It was probably a porter (malt extract/ grain recipe from Dan’s Homebrewing) with cocoa nibs in the secondary. It was super rich and intense in flavour.
What is a change you have implemented that you feel made a big improvement in your beer?
I got a new mash tun with insulation, and it’s awesome.
What advice would you give to a new homebrewer?
Clean and sanitize everything
Do you have any certifications related to beer and/or homebrewing (BJCP, Cicerone, etc…)?
BJCP Certified Beer Judge, with the Mead endorsement.
If you could be a tree frog, what colour tree frog would you be and why?
Blue green with gold swirls; colour of my first set of dice.
